Gauff vs Pegula: an all-American opener in the desert
Two of the most consistent players of 2026 close out the opening day of the WTA Finals. Coco Gauff is the favourite at 1.71, Jessica Pegula is 2.28, which puts it at roughly 57/43 once the margin is removed. On paper the two are very closely matched, but each comes in with a weak spot.
Form & Context
Coco Gauff has the stronger season: 48-16 over 52 weeks, 33-10 on tour-level hard courts, and 8-2 over her last ten. She has also won the last two meetings with Pegula, including the Cincinnati final 6-2 6-4. Two things temper that. Her last match was a 3-6 3-6 loss to Mertens in Beijing on 7 October, 32 days ago. And her only previous visit to this venue in 2026 ended with a retirement against Eala in the third round in March.
Jessica Pegula is the model of consistency: 51-16 over 52 weeks and 35-11 on tour-level hard courts. She reached the Indian Wells quarter-finals in March. Her serve is the steadier of the two, holding 76% of the time with very few double faults. Her autumn ended badly, though. She lost two of her last three matches, the most recent a defeat to Ostapenko in Wuhan after winning the first set.

Match Breakdown
The case for Gauff. She has the better form score, the recent H2H edge and a convincing win over Pegula in a big final this summer. When she wins, it is usually in straight sets: 19 of her 29 hard-court wins this year came in two.
The case for Pegula. Her serve is more reliable, which matters in dry desert air where Gauff's second serve can be exposed. Her record at this venue in 2026 is also better. If Gauff is still shaking off a month of rust, Pegula is the kind of opponent who will make her pay for it.
The mental side is a wash. Their comeback and collapse rates are almost identical, so neither player has a clear edge once the match gets tight.
Where's the value?
Our model makes it 57/43 Gauff, the same as the market. The closest thing to an edge is Pegula +1.5 sets @ 1.48, but at roughly +2% it doesn't clear our bar, and it turns negative once we account for how often these two win in straight sets. Gauff 2-1 in correct score is essentially break-even.
Verdict: Gauff is a deserved favourite, but the price is fair and the rust is real. No pre-match bet. This is one for live trading, where the first few service games will tell you whether Gauff is sharp or still finding her rhythm.
