ATP Rome – Shelton vs. Munar
🧠 Form & Context
Ben Shelton
Ben Shelton has been one of the more impressive risers during this year’s European clay swing, posting a 5–3 record that includes a runner-up finish in Munich and a third-round showing in Madrid.
Importantly, Shelton doesn’t have many points to defend during this stretch, giving him a real shot at breaking into the ATP top 10. Currently ranked No. 12, he’s trending upwards thanks to better patience and smarter shot selection on slower surfaces.
Shelton reached the third round in Rome last year, beating Kotov along the way, and he’s shown signs of figuring out how to adapt his explosive game to red clay’s demands—using more shape, margin, and controlled aggression.
Jaume Munar
The gritty Spaniard battled through a tense first-round match, overcoming Tomas Barrios Vera in three sets and snapping a minor three-match losing skid.
Munar, a classic clay-courter, has historically made his name on slow courts with tireless defense and deep rally tolerance. While he spent part of early 2025 flirting with success on hard courts, clay remains his natural habitat.
He’s also quietly developed a knack for upsetting top players, with recent wins over Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur highlighting his danger level. Though he hasn’t fully clicked this clay season, Munar is always a tough out—especially when he’s locked in defensively.
